Electric
Ducted Fan SM110-52 unit
|
EDF F104 video (10 MB, please right click and save) Dubbed the “Manned
Missile”, the F104 has served air forces all over the world for decades,
becoming one of the world’s most produced jet fighters. The short, stubby
wings didn’t dampen our enthusiasm to develop an F104 for electric ducted
fan propulsion, but they did demand some serious design analysis to
ensure the model performs the way a Starfighter should. Due to the small
wing area, light weight is vitally important for optimum performance.
For this reason, similar construction techniques to the EDF Panther
have been adopted. The fuselage is moulded from epoxy/glass and comes
pre-primed, as do the epoxy/glass wingtanks. The wings are moulded glass/foam
sandwich construction with carbon fibre spars. The model is designed
for the Wemotec Minifan, and high performance brushless motors. The
moulded epoxy/glass inlet ducting is designed for maximum efficiency
and is also very light. A vacuum formed clear canopy completes the list
of moulded parts. A pre-cut balsa tailplane is supplied, as are all
fuselage internal structural components.
